Gone Missing

If it is okay for the governor of California to go missing with no explanation, then it is okay for DFT to go missing for a week. That’s my excuse for not providing a write-up this past week; however, I did not appear at the wedding of one of the spawns of the Getty empire. That being said, the previous weekend had me returning to the picturesque campus of the University of Colorado Boulder for Dad’s Weekend. In a nutshell, here is what happened: Friday night Pearl Street parade and chow at the Bohemian Biergarten. Saturday pregaming at The Sink and the Pi Kapp house. No beer funnel races this time, thank goodness. Exploding urinals in the stadium covering me with a new scent that required me to drink wine in my seat and be ridiculed. CU pulling off an upset over the Oregon State Beavers, and the students storming the field. Post-game transportation provided by a crazy bicycle Rickshaw ride back to the Hill carting six singing adults.

Dad of the year right there!

As Jason Aldean would sing, that's my kinda party!
Run Ralphie run, and when Rob's cuppeth runs empty and the kids storm the field.

Last week around the country, we witnessed Arizona and UNLV get their first wins of the year. The Sam Bowl between Sam Hartman and Sam Howell resulted in Wake Forest losing their first game of the year to UNC. The Boilermakers ruined another top five team’s season by knocking off Michigan State Sparty. Ohio State and Bama looked less than impressive in their wins over Nebraska and LSU. The initial BCS playoff rankings were released to justify the blowhards on ESPCNN having something to debate. Ahhh, okay, I will take a breath now and move on to this most recent weekend

This weekend was much less exciting than the previous one for me as I was grounded in preparation for my upcoming once-in-a-lifetime feat where I will attend five games in six days. More on that later. I tethered myself to the couch at DFT world HQ for the majority of the weekend and watched my Irish and Boise State Broncos win and my Sooners play their worst game in years, losing soundly to Baylor.

This week around the country - Staying in the Big 12, Oklahoma State keeps getting better as they trounced TCU 63-17, and Kansas, yes Kansas, delivered Texas their fifth straight loss under the leadership of head football coach Cutty Sark. In the Big Ten, Michigan defeated Penn State in Happy Valley, and there was no spoilermaker appearance this weekend as Ohio State thoroughly pummeled Purdue in the Horseshoe. In Pac-12 action, Oregon wracked up another win against Wazzu to keep their playoff hopes alive. In the ACC, Sam Hartman led his Demon Deacons to a victory over NC State, and Pitt defeated UNC and Sam Howell in OT on Thursday night. Down in the SEC, UGA, after falling behind 10-0 to the Vols, stormed back for a 41-17 win on good old Rocky Top. Ole Miss secured a win over Texas A&M in Oxford, followed by another great post-game interview with coach Lane. Florida surrendered 52 points to FCS school Samford but did end up victorious. The Gator nation is calling for the large head of head coach Dan Mullen as this season has headed in the wrong direction. (See what I did there?) In Group of Five news, Cincy’s record remains unblemished with a win on Friday over USF. UTSA escaped with a win over lowly Southern Miss to advance to 10-0 on the season. A shout-out to my alma mater Frostburg State for winning the Mountain East Conference in NCAA Division 2 action.

Bieber- Goes to the Bald Bastard of Baylor, Coach Dave Aranda. Okay, maybe I am a sore loser, but hats off to Baylor for thoroughly dominating and confusing an Oklahoma team that appeared to be in a parallel universe on Saturday. Now, here is why Aranda is this week’s distinguished recipient of the coveted Biebs award: Baylor had a 10-point lead, possession of the ball and the clock ticking down to three seconds, and Aranda called a timeout. The students stormed the field, and Oklahoma was fine with walking off to the locker room to lick their wounds. However, the referees insisted that they come back on the field for the final play as it was presumed that Baylor would take a knee. But no, the bald bastard trotted out his field goal unit and proceeded to kick a disrespectful field goal, only adding insult to injury. As a former basketball coach, I never apologized for winning or kicking the crap out of the opposing teams, but I also knew when to call the dogs off. This was crossing the line of sportsmanship. And Karma is a bitch, baldy. Hopefully OU can win out and meet you in the Big 12 championship game to give you some payback. But until then, enjoy your Bieberware.

Ginger -  Goes to Fox Sports Big Noon Kickoff show for giving us an alternative to the mundane and tiresome ESPN College Lameday. The Fox crew consists of Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Brady Quin, Bob Stoops and their network straight man Rob Stone. This show has so much more enthusiasm, excitement and superior analysis in comparison to the faltering ESPN Gameday. It’s like pulling yourself away from the mainstream news and finding an alternate source that will bring you happiness. I highly encourage all the DFTers to give it a shot and let me know what you think.

This week -  In a daring feat that has never been attempted by mankind before, I have scheduled the following CFB gauntlet: I will link up with my brother, Navy Brian, for “MACtion” games on Tuesday at Miami, OH, and Wednesday at Ball State. On Thursday, I will fly into RDU for my annual boys weekend with my high school crew for a Thursday game at Duke and Saturday games at UNC and NC State. There is also an outside chance of ticking off a bucket list item as Duke has a home basketball game Friday night. That will be a game-time decision. Stay tuned and check up on me throughout the week.

Happy Tailgating!
